Project Overview: Kitchen and living remodel creating open flow between main spaces.

Client’s Vision

Our client’s kitchen, built in 1910, felt cramped, outdated, and lacked functional workspace. She wanted a kitchen that was practical, inviting, and easy to use—a space where cooking, gathering, and daily routines could flow naturally. The goal wasn’t just updating finishes; it was about reconfiguring the heart of the home while preserving its historic character. By optimizing the layout, we aimed to improve functionality, flow, and usability for both everyday life and entertaining.

Scope of Work:

  • Removed walls and drop ceiling to expand kitchen layout.
  • Installed full custom cabinet pack with hard‑surface countertops.
  • Updated plumbing fixtures and appliances.
  • New LVP flooring and custom millwork to match existing finishes.
  • Resurfaced ceilings and painted throughout.

Our Challenges & Solutions

One of the biggest design challenges was balancing openness with practicality within the existing footprint. Since an addition wasn’t possible, the space required careful planning. We adjusted cabinetry sizes, optimized storage, and rethought work zones to make the kitchen feel larger and more functional. Countertop space, appliance placement, and workflow were all carefully considered to ensure efficiency and comfort. Construction challenges included uneven walls and aging framing typical of a 1910 home. We selectively reframed areas to create stable surfaces for cabinetry, countertops, and finishes, allowing modern design elements to integrate seamlessly while preserving the home’s original character.

What Makes This Project Unique

This remodel transformed a century-old kitchen without increasing square footage. By optimizing the existing layout, we created a functional and modern space with improved storage, workflow, and usability. The result is a kitchen that feels open, well-planned, and thoughtfully updated for today’s needs, while maintaining the home’s historic charm.
