Project Overview – Structural and kitchen remodel focused on flow and functionality.
This nearly 90-year-old home had undergone many changes over the years—additions, layout shifts, and evolving needs—but the homeowners were ready for a remodel that brought clarity and cohesion to the space. Partnering with Davina Designs, we reimagined the home’s flow, refined the layout, and tied together disjointed elements from past additions. The goal was to honor the home’s original character while updating it for modern living. The result is a home that feels fresh, functional, and familiar—rooted in its history and ready for years to come.
Modernizing a century-old home required navigating structural and layout constraints. The electrical panel couldn’t be moved due to code restrictions, so we concealed it with custom artwork. Three major load-bearing beams interrupted the vision for a flat ceiling; working with engineering, we designed a custom steel beam solution to maintain structural integrity and achieve a clean, open ceiling. Blending the original home with a 30-year-old addition revealed further challenges. To create a continuous ceiling line, we designed a steel beam system to support joists from both sides. The electrical panel near the stairs was relocated for code compliance, and a misaligned toilet drain required adjusting cabinetry and rerouting plumbing. Coordination across trades ensured the design intent was preserved.
This remodel stands out for how much was accomplished within the constraints of a classic North End home. By moving walls and restructuring the space, we created a gourmet kitchen centered around a Monte Cristo Satin granite island and Portofino Classico quartz countertops. Monogram appliances, soft-bevel shaker cabinetry, and a built-in coffee bar enhance both style and function. The transformation brings modern luxury to a historic home while preserving its character.
